Removing Windows Admin/User Passwords Using LInux/Ubuntu11.10

Hello Folks,

Here we shall see a small tutorial on "How to remove windows passwords Using a linux CD".
Requirements to do is a Linux CD and of course the system whose password is to be removed/changed.

Basically the list of users and their passwords are saved in the operating systems in a file call SAM.
So coming to the point, this SAM file has to be edited in order to change or remove the password of the users ( we can view the list of users also).

Now lets start step wise.
1. Insert the Linux CD and boot into the CD-ROM.
2 .After booting into the live CD of the Linux we'll be able to browse the file system.
3. Now open the terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+t or user the super key/windows button there appears a screen and there you can type terminal of open it.
4. After opening the terminal navigate to the folder containing SAM file( it is in the location C:/Windows/System32/config).
5. Now type
chntpw -l sam.
it will show the list of users, their status whether disabled/enabled etc.
If the terminal says command not found or any thing like just type the following command to install chntpw.
sudo apt-get install chntpw
 6. Now select the user name whose password is to be disturbed.
after selected type the following command
chntpw -u <username> sam

Handling ISO images in linux/ubuntu 11.10

Using an ISO image on Ubuntu Linux is pretty easy. It can be done by just typing few commands in terminal.
Open up a terminal window and type in the following commands

sudo mkdir /media/iso

sudo modprobe loop

sudo mount filename.iso /media/iso -t iso9660 -o loop

That it now we should be able to navigate to the /media/iso folder and see the contents of the ISO image.
Now if we want to unmount the iso, use the following command:

sudo umount /media/iso

That's it.
If you  think it was plenty work. You can just install a software FURIOUS ISO MOUNT.
You can install using apt-get using the following command
sudo apt-get install furiusisomount
or by downloading the package. You can download it here.

Installing Matlab on ubuntu 11.10

 Hello,

Here is a small hint in installing matlab in Linux platforms ( of course i used ubuntu11.10).
However coming to the point we can install matlab with sufficient privileges only.
So now just insert the cd of mount the image that consists the setup files. now just type the following command to start the instalation.
sudo /<full_path>/install\
then there appears the window which is self explanative.
Just follow the instructions  in that window to fully complete the instalation.
But there won't be any launcher of icon installed.
Though typing matlab in the terminal would be able to run the matlab program.
Totally there are two problems that will arise after installation.
1.NO LAUNCHER
2.AN ERROR SAYING
"MATLAB desktop keyboard shortcuts, such as Ctrl+S, are now customizable.
In addition, many keyboard shortcuts have changed for improved consistency
across the desktop.

To customize keyboard shortcuts, use Preferences. From there, you can also
restore previous default settings by selecting "R2009a UNIX Default Set"
from the active settings drop-down list. For more information, see Help.

Click here if you do not want to see this message again.
Cannot write to preference file "matlab.prf" in "/home/jodiaq/.matlab/R2010a".
Check file permissions."
Now we shall take a look at the solution for these problems.
Solution to problem 1:

Adding New OS(Operating System) to grub

Hello,
"i am having two/three operating systems But grub loader is showing only one of them what do i do now. Please help me in this regard!!!!"
Here is the solution for these sort of questions.
Just we have to do is type a simple command.
sudo grub-update.
in the terminal. It will automatically check the os in your hard drive. This will also work for the new operating systems that have added because of another hard disk connected to your cpu.
this is how it should display in the terminal.

jodiaq@jodiaq-nl:~$ sudo update-grub

[sudo] password for jodiaq:

Generating grub.cfg ...

Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-12-generic

Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-12-generic

Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin

Found Microsoft Windows XP Professional on /dev/sda1

Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sdb1

done

jodiaq@jodiaq-nl:~$

Unable to get Ubuntu 11.10 login sounds(FIX_2)

In my previous post i have explained a laborious method to the sound (drums) back. But it failed to play my sound once my ubuntu got updated.
i tried the previous steps again but failed.
Here got the new easiest and quicker method to get login/startup sounds back.

->install "dconf editor"

->goto org->gnome->desktop->sound.

->there you can find theme-name (by default it's value will be "freedesktop").

->change it to "ubuntu"(don't forget all are lower case)

-> then logout and login

->that's it you can hear your drums back.

Unable to get Ubuntu 11.10 login sounds(Fix)

Hello folks,

I am having windows xp. I just downloaded the ubuntu 11.10 and installed seperately on the HD. Guess what happened. It won't play login/startup sounds. Don't know what happened. As a newbie i started searching over. As i read the problem is the wrong file placement or we can say wrong configuration of file paths. At last i found the fix. Just followed the following steps.
1. Tried to play the login sound manually (use the following command)

/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login"

, the following message was displayed in the terminal window:
Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap"
Failed to play sound: File or data not found
To clear the Gtk-WARNING message and the login sound (drums), I performed the following steps:

Networking Between ubuntu and windows xp

As we all know we can establish a Network between ubuntu and windows xp. I tried to connect my friends Dell inspiron loaded with ubuntu and another friends system loaded with windows xp i was unable to establish a connection. Actually i was trying to establish a connection for file sharing. But i failed for long time. But my friend succeeded.
All he done is just entering any random ip address, but giving the same and precise gateway for both the systems.for example
for system 1:
ip                      176.64.25.46
subnet mask      255.255.255.0
defaul gateway  176.64.25.1
leave the dns we don't need it.
for system 2
ip                      176.64.25.79
subnet mask      255.255.255.0
default gateway 176.64.25.1
that's it we got them connected and we had our file sharing.
This is the solution that worked for us hope it works for you too.
Good luck
